New to ballet?

Many of our students are trying ballet for the very first time as adults, whilst others are returning after many years away. Our classes are designed to be welcoming, supportive, and enjoyable, with teachers who guide you step by step.

You do not need to be flexible, fit, or have any previous dance experience to begin. Ballet is a wonderful way to improve posture, balance, strength, and coordination while supporting both physical and mental wellbeing. It also offers the chance to enjoy music and movement in a friendly and encouraging environment, and to meet others who share an interest in dance.

You are always welcome to work at your own pace. Many students choose to build up gradually, and it is perfectly fine to take breaks or sit out an exercise if you need to.

“SCB has been my ballet family and a time where I can relax and focus on music and movement. What I love the most is the openness: everybody is welcome irrespective of their level, beginner, intermediate or advanced!”

Where should I start?

If you are completely new to ballet, we recommend the Absolute Beginner classes.

If you have some previous experience and you’re unsure which class is right for you, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help you find your suited level.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely is perfect.  Many students wear leggings and a t-shirt, or a leotard and tights.

Avoid wearing anything too baggy or heavy, as we want to see your technique and alignment.

Additional clothing like warm ups and skirts are optional

Should I wear ballet shoes?

Ballet shoes are recommended, but not essential for your first class. If you’re trying out ballet for the first time, you can wear regular socks.

When purchasing ballet shoes for beginners we recommend full-sole canvas or leather shoes. As you gain strength in your feet you can wear split-sole shoes. Pointe shoes and demi-pointes are not worn in any of our classes.

How should I do my hair?

Long hair should be tied back so it’s off your face and neck.

Anything else?

We recommend light jewellery as it can get in the way, hurt yourself, or hurt others.
